A. Lange & Söhne : Celebrating 30 Years of the LANGE 1
From Heritage to Innovation
Established in 1845 by Dresden watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange, A. Lange & Söhne pioneered precision watchmaking in Saxony. Lange’s remarkable pocket watches became collector’s items worldwide, revered for their intricate craftsmanship. However, after World War II, the brand faced expropriation and nearly disappeared. In 1990, Ferdinand’s great-grandson, Walter Lange, reignited the brand’s legacy, combining heritage with modern innovation. This resurgence gave rise to timeless designs like the LANGE 1, which, with its signature outsize date and precision engineering, became a modern icon that continues to push the boundaries of watchmaking.
The LANGE 1 was first introduced in 1994, marking a turning point in horology with its distinct, off-center dial and sophisticated mechanics. Now, celebrating its 30th anniversary, A. Lange & Söhne releases four limited editions of the LANGE 1 and LITTLE LANGE 1, each a testament to the brand’s journey from heritage to modern excellence. These exclusive editions embody the principles that have defined A. Lange & Söhne for nearly two centuries—artistry, precision, and originality.
Distinctive in Every Detail
In 1994, the LANGE 1 captured the world’s attention with its off-center dial layout and Lange outsize date, reshaping traditional aesthetics and establishing a new standard for elegance and precision. Today, for its 30th anniversary, A. Lange & Söhne unveils two versions of the LANGE 1 and two of the LITTLE LANGE 1 in limited runs, each with a unique colour combination and design that honors the original’s legacy while showcasing refined, modern craftsmanship.
The new editions include platinum models with a rare black onyx dial and pink-gold versions with a striking blue dial in 925 silver. These models are available in highly limited quantities—300 each of the LANGE 1 editions and 150 each of the LITTLE LANGE 1—emphasizing their exclusivity and the brand’s ongoing dedication to fine watchmaking.
The Golden Ratio in Motion
The particular dial design accounts for the balanced appearance of the LANGE 1. Graced with Roman numerals and lancet-shaped appliques, the hour and minute circle is located on the left-hand side whilst the outsize date, the power-reserve display and the subsidiary seconds dial are positioned on the right-hand side, along an imaginary vertical axis. The length and size ratios of the various displays are in accordance with the rules of the golden ratio, creating an aesthetic balance that exudes timelessness, even three decades after its debut.
Aesthetic Excellence in New Colours
The new model versions of the LANGE 1 and the LITTLE LANGE 1 radiate festive elegance – as befits the anniversary. The watch in 950 platinum showcases a dial faced with onyx. This gemstone, which is rarely used in fine watchmaking, captivates with its jet-black shimmering surface: it is the first time it has adorned a LANGE 1 model. In the 750 pink-gold version, the warm, reddish luster of the precious metal is paired with a blue dial in 925 silver. All four limited-edition models exhibit exceptional lucid design with slender bezels and prominent lugs. The case diameter of LANGE 1 amounts to 38.5 millimetres and 36.8 millimetres in the LITTLE LANGE 1.
Precision Engineering: The L121.1 Manufacture Calibre
Driving the LANGE 1 and LITTLE LANGE 1 is the L121.1 manufacture calibre, embodying the brand’s commitment to precision and reliability. This calibre ensures the outsize date advances seamlessly at midnight and features a custom-designed balance spring, a 72-hour power reserve, and intricate decoration visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback. These technical achievements underscore the brand’s dedication to horological excellence and innovation.
A Legacy of Innovation and Timeless Design
Reflecting on the journey of the LANGE 1, CEO Wilhelm Schmid describes it as a perfect blend of originality, elegance, and precision. Anthony de Haas, Director of Product Development, highlights the LANGE 1 as a “symbol of our commitment to timepieces that merge superb functionality with aesthetic appeal.” The expansion of the LANGE 1 family, with innovative complications like the TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR and TIME ZONE models, showcases A. Lange & Söhne’s unwavering pursuit of horological artistry.
