A collaboration between two dynamic power houses.
Seven years ago, Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Hublot forged a unique partnership with Italian supercar maker Ferrari. To mark the occasion, Hublot unveiled the Big Bang Ferrari, presented in the Manufacture’s ground-breaking and patented alloy, Magic Gold. An instant hit, it served as precursor of what was to come from the continuing and close collaboration between these two dynamic power houses. Recently, Hublot introduced a new Magic Gold version to the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari collection, in the form of the Ferrari Unico Magic Gold (Ref 402.MX.0138.WR).
Limited to 250 pieces, its 45-mm case and its bezel are cut in the most scratch-resistant solid gold ever conceived. Whilst “standard” 18-carat gold has a resistance of 400 Vickers and hardened steel 600 Vickers, Magic Gold offers a resistance close to 1,000 Vickers. This effectively means it can only be scratched by a diamond. A high-tech foundry within the Hublot Manufacture in Nyon allows the company to produce Magic Gold entirely in-house using a complex manufacturing process that “fuses” boron carbide and 24K gold. This enables Hublot to retain absolute control and oversight over quality standards.
The case, including the bezel, is crafted from polished Magic Gold and boasts a multi-component “sandwich” construction. 6 H-shaped black-plated titanium screws hold the bezel in place. The Hublot and Ferrari teams worked in close collaboration on the design of the dial, and it really shows. Hours and minutes are displayed centrally, with running seconds shown on an indicator at 9 o’clock that resembles an air extractor. At 3 o’clock a tachometer-style minute counter tracks elapsed chronograph minutes, complete with date aperture in gear selector mode. Ferrari’s iconic prancing horse logo also adorns the dial just above 6 o’clock.
The open-worked design of the dial offers the wearer some insight into the inner-workings of the UNICO manufacture HUB1241 movement beneath. Boasting an integrated flyback chronograph with a column-wheel mechanism, this self-winding movement beats at the rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour and guarantees a power reserve of 72 hours.
If you’re not in the market for a gold watch, there is also the option of the equally cool Ferrari Unico Carbon Red Ceramic (Ref 402.QF.0110.WR). Limited to 500 pieces, it offers the same dimensions and movement as the Magic Gold version. Its case, however, is constructed from lightweight but super strong carbon fibre. This model is paired with a polished red ceramic bezel, held in place by 6 H-shaped black-plated titanium screws.
Both models are rated waterproof to 100m and both are fitted with straps made from Alcantara leather lined with black rubber for extra comfort on the wrist. Closing the strap is a black ceramic and black-plated titanium deployant buckle clasp. As previously mentioned, the Ferrari Unico Magic Gold is available as a limited edition of 250 pieces, while the Ferrari Unico Carbon Red Ceramic is limited to 500 pieces.
Given the limited production numbers of both models, worldwide allocations to authorised Hublot retailers are limited. Watches of Switzerland is pleased therefore to be able to offer an example of each watch to our esteemed clients. If you would like to purchase one or both models, we encourage you to act quickly as these watches will be popular.
